It's That Time Again: 2011 Jax Film Festival!

    The festivities begin October 13th and go through the 16th. The events scheduled are as followed:

  Thursday kicks off the Opening Night Reception Film with award-winning “Wild Horse,Wild Ride,” Q&A with Alexandra Dawson to follow, in San Marco. 

  Friday’s Special Screening of “Bettie Page Reveals All,” & Dr. Sketchy After Party, Q&A with Academy Award nominated filmmaker Mark Mori, in Riverside.

  The Red Carpet and Gala Special Event takes place Saturday with Tribute and Q&A with celebrity guest (TBD).

  Sunday's WIF brunch at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens with honoree Christy Cashman, Executive Producer of “The Kids Are Alright.

  Sunday night wraps up the festival with the Closing Night Awards & Film. “Rising Star” award recipient Cassandra Freeman, a Douglas Anderson Alumni, delivers a powerful performance in “Kinyarwanda.” She will be on hand afterward for a Q&A.

MTV looking for " Bad Boys" in Jacksonville

- Like Dandelion Dust, a movie filmed here in Jacksonville is to premiere on the LMN Saturday September 3 at 8 p.m. 

- Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino and Barry Pepper star the heart-wrenching tale of a recently released ex-con who uses a legal loophole to locate his son, who was adopted by an upper-crust family shortly after his father was incarcerated. When Rip Porter (Pepper) went to prison, his wife, Wendy (Sorvino), couldn't handle the responsibilities of being a single parent. Wanting the best for her newborn son, Joey, she put the boy up for adoption. Adopted by Jack (Cole Hauser) and Molly Campbell (Kate Levering), Joey now enjoys an idyllic life with his new parents in a small town just outside of West Palm Beach, FL. Then, one day, Jack and Molly receive a troubling phone call from the social worker who assisted with the adoption: Rip has just been released from prison, and he's eager to start a new life with his wife Wendy and son Joey (Maxwell Perry Cotton). The movie is based of the Best seller novel written by Karen Kingsbury.

“Thespians” Screening at 5 Points Theatre

“Thespians” opens Friday August 26, 2011 at 5:15 p.m. for the first of ten limited showings at the 5 Points Theatre, in Riverside.


It was during the 2010 Jacksonville Film Festival that “Thespians” had its World Premiere at the Florida Theatre. Matt Soergel—The Florida Times Union, called the film “A Flat Out Triumph”.

Every performer starts somewhere and many of them started in their high school thespian troupe. “Thespians” is the story of 4 of those troupes as they embark on the incredible journey of preparing for the largest high school theatre festival in the world.

Star of "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" Still a Bit Afraid!

-  The leading lady of the Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, admits she still likes to leave a light on when she goes to bed. Baliee Madison (Sally in the movie) admitted that although she does not like it to be too bright she definitely likes to be able to see her surroundings if she does wake up in the night!

   Who blames her! The 11-year old actress, 9 years old when they were filming, is surrounded by creepy, crawling blood-thirsty creatures named homunculi in the film. The creatures were actually edited into the movie using CGI but still scary none the less. The up and coming star has already been in one big name movie, Bridge to Tarabithia and has an upcoming role in the movie Cowgirls and Angels.

   Although the creatures are CGI, she thinks the average movie-goer is still going to be freaked out! If you want to see if YOU'RE still afraid of the dark go see the movie which premiers Friday, August 26th!

"Thespians" to open at 5- Point Theatre

-  Warren Skeels of Tigerlilymedia, makes his directorial debut with his first film, Thespians. The film follows over 7,000 Florida high school students in pursuit of achieving their dreams of being on Broadway. The film will be opening at the 5-points Theatre this Friday , August 26th through August 30th.

Joey Travolta Gives Autistic Children A Voice Through Film

   - At the HEAL Film Camp held at the University of North Florida, 50 children ages 10 to 17 worked closely with Joey Travolta, John Travolta's brother,and his team to create a 30-minute short film. HEAL (Healing Every Autistic Life), is a local organization for children and families with autistic children. Through an application process, HEAL selects the 50 children, 30 whom have autism, to attend the camp each year. The other 20 campers are siblings of the autistic children.

     "Children with autism think  pictures and film making are moving pictures," said Travolta. "So it's natural that they take to this, it gives them a voice." Not only does it give them a voice, the film camp gives them something to do for two weeks straight as opposed to possibly not having the same opportunities their siblings might have. The HEAL Film Camp was started four years ago, when Karen Sadler of FilmLab Productions approached Travolta about starting a film camp in Jacksonville for autistic children. Not only does the camp give the campers a creative outlet, it also provides them a chance to see their siblings in a new light and bring them together to work towards a bigger goal. Every step of the production process provides the campers with building blocks to a better life, from the actual filming right down to the catering.The campers, their siblings and everyone else who participated in the 30-minute short film will be able to see the finished product in the fall, in a film screening being held at the university.

Author Brenda Jackson is "Truly" Making History

    Five Alive Films is proud to announce its first feature film premiere, Truly Everlasting, based on a short story written by New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Brenda Jackson. The movie premiere will be held at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, November 5, 2011. Doors will open at 5pm. The event will include red carpet entry, an opening reception, premiere of the movie and an after-party and catering by Chef Andre. Tickets for the event went on sale June 15, 2011 and are available at the Florida Theatre and Ticketmaster. A portion of proceeds to benefit the Josiephine Threatt Scholarship Foundation at Florida Memorial University.

   In 2002, one of Jackson's books was selected for a made-for-television movie by a major television network. However, the project left her readers disheartened, because it strayed away from the original storyline. She then decided the next time a book about her beloved Madaris Family was made into a movie she would do it herself. "I wanted the movie adaptation to be as close to the actual book as possible. My loyal Madaris readers deserved that," said Jackson. In order to accomplish her goal, she became the sole investor and used her and her husband's retirement funds to produce her first feature film, Truly Everlasting, directed by her son, Gerald Jackson, Jr. Jackson is the first African American romance author to fully finance and produce a feature-film based on one of her novels; and use a close family member "her son" - to not only write the script, but to also bring her story, Truly Everlasting, to light as the director. 

 

    Director, Gerald Jackson, Jr., owner of Five Alive Films, has produced several successful book trailers for Brenda Jackson in the past. The first trailer for her book, Solid Soul, was so successful resulted in the title's second printing. Afterward, Mrs. Jackson returned to Five Alive Films to promote her fiftieth romance novel - Slow Burn and has since worked with the company for the trailers for Tall, Dark Westmoreland and Intimate Seduction. When she commissioned Five Alive Films to direct Truly Everlasting, she knew that the company would be a great fit for both her readers vision and her's.
